L'Apollonide: Memories of the Brothel
Bertrand Bonello, 2011

#5, 2011 Skandies

  • This is one of those movies that isn't about plot or character or theme but about texture, i.e., one of those movies of a sort I generally do not like

  • It is also one of those movies in which a character has a surreal dream at the beginning and the elements of that dream end up happening in "real life" at various points in the movie, i.e., one of those movies of a sort I generally do not like

  • The Skandie voters went gaga over the way the movie is set in 1899-1900 and yet there is diegetic music from the 1960s — to me that is interesting but not thrilling, and I've encountered anachronistic music in movies before

  • The film is about a brothel and conveys how a brothel is about as erotic as a meat packing plant is appetizing, but I didn't expect a brothel to be erotic in the first place so it's not like scales fell from my eyes

  • I did like the cut at the very end involving the number 24

  • I guess that's about it
