I first heard them: on MTV's 120 Minutes

Sound: In the mid-'90s, James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky of the Smashing Pumpkins tried their hands at starting their own record label, and Fulflej was their flagship signing. James said he didn't see any reason why Fulflej shouldn't become as successful as the Pumpkins themselves, and I agree that there's a comparison to be made there.

Further listening: The whole Wack-Ass Tuba Riff album is well worth a listen. Here's another track from it:

"Quite Like This" (1996)
