2019.06 minutiae

  • Since I drained my savings to put myself through my teacher credentialing program, I have been doing a lot of tutoring this summer, and traveling outside my usual area to meet with students.  Back in the ’00s I would go as far as Sonoma, Davis, even Carmel, but in recent years San Ramon has been my limit.  This summer I’ve been spending a lot of time in Dublin and Livermore, though—the fringes of the East Bay, before it gives way to the Central Valley.  From way out there the commute to the city and Silicon Valley probably drains your gas tank pretty quickly.  Or so I gather from the fact that one afternoon I was heading back to the freeway came to a stoplight, and noticed that the car in front of me was a Tesla.  And so was the car to my left.  And the one to my right.  And the one that pulled up behind me.  In fact, I was in a pack of no fewer than seven Teslas.

  • In other car news, I was returning home on Highway 24 when I saw an old jalopy in the fast lane with a FOR SALE sign in the back window.  I was wondering how much the price might be when its entire back bumper fell off.  So, less after that, I assume.

  • As noted in my previous minutiae article, since my school email is provided by Google I have recently encountered its weird lists of suggested replies.  Here are the suggested replies to someone who asked for “a good day and time next week” for an appointment:

…why was Google so insistent that this meeting happen on a Wednesday?

  • Three years ago I lamented that while virtually everything else that had ever existed had made its way onto the Internet, one rare exception was the low‑budget HBO documentary whose (extremely simplistic) animation had terrified me as a child: Missing Persons: Dead or Alive?.  I am pleased to report that as of April 10, there is one fewer exception.
